Vink Chemicals offers alternative formulations for preserving paint products

Reminder! As of 1 May 2020, new substance-specific concentration limits for methylisothiazolinone (MIT) will apply.

To eliminate the need for additional hazard statements on paints, lacquers, adhesives and construction chemicals, Vink Chemicalsoffers alternative combinations of active substances with comparable effectiveness.

The EU has classified mixtures containing MIT as skin sensitising according to category 1A and has therefore defined a new substance-specific concentration limit of 15ppm for this class of substances.

The new lower limit will apply to paints, lacquers, adhesives and construction chemicals effective 1 May 2020.

As of that date, any mixture that contains MIT with a concentration of 15ppm must be labelled with the hazard statement H317 "Can cause allergic skin reactions”.

It is, therefore, urgently necessary for all suppliers of the affected product categories to find alternative formulations for time-proven products in their portfolio.

Vink Chemicals offers solutions and recommends using Vinkocide KN or parmetol BPX as alternatives.

Vinkocide KN is a formulation consisting of 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) and pyridine-2-thiol-1-oxide with a sodium salt.

It was specially developed for preserving products with a very high pH value (up to 13) and for use at high temperatures (up to 90°C).

Parmetol BPX is a synergistic combination of phenoxyethanol, butylbenzisothiazolone (BBIT) and bis(3-aminopropyl)dodecylamine (BDA).

Vink Chemicals generally recommends a dosage of 0.5 to 1.0% for parmetol BP

X. However, the exact dosage should be determined in tests for sufficient preservation by Vink’s application technology department.

Both preparations are available from Vink Chemicals in all common container sizes.

In addition to future sustainability of at least 10 years and labelling advantages, they are significantly less expensive and are effective against a broad spectrum of yeasts, fungi and bacteria.

David Zilm, a biocide expert at Vink Chemicals, gives the following advice: "Manufacturers of binding agents for the paint industry, printing inks, adhesives and construction chemicals should switch as soon as possible to substance combinations that are not subject to declaration.”
