Axalta Coating Systems, a leading global coatings company, has become the first manufacturer within the powder coatings industry to receive International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC Plus) for bio-based feedstock sourcing practices. This milestone further reinforces Axalta’s commitment to ensuring sustainability remains central to every part of its business, including helping customers accelerate their own sustainability initiatives and achievements.
Developed to support the transition towards carbon-neutrality and create a sustainable bio-economy that minimises waste production, the certification assesses compliance with key sustainability principles aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which are aimed at ending poverty and protecting the planet.
Axalta earned ISCC Plus following a thorough third-party audit of its supply chain and production processes, which validated its ability to successfully produce a selection of its coating formulations using bio-based resins. Such solutions are identical to incumbent polyester resins derived from fossil fuels in terms of quality and properties but enable, on average, a CO2 emissions reduction of 25%, accounting for small variances between coating types. This allows environmentally conscious decision makers within industrial markets to access coatings solutions from sustainable and fully traceable sources.

The use of bio-based solutions, which come from non-food organic waste and contain significantly lower levels of embodied carbon, offers the cheapest and fastest path for customers to reduce scope 3 emissions, making them particularly attractive when reporting on scope 3 emissions becomes mandatory within the next few years.
Shelley Bausch, President, Global Industrial Coatings at Axalta, said: “As the first business within the powder coating industry to achieve this certification, this sends a clear message about our focus to make a real impact towards shared sustainability goals. We are committed to driving positive change throughout the value chain. By innovating with purpose to develop smarter solutions for better living and a sustainable future while offering exceptional performance, we empower customers to make better decisions that help protect the planet for generations to come. This commitment to the environment is at the heart of everything we do, and we hope to inspire others to join us in this effort.”
Aligned with its goal to support our customers in reducing their emissions, Axalta will launch the first bio-based product range in Europe in the coming months.
