Vietnam’s thriving industry

The importance of the Vietnamese coatings industry is clearly demonstrated by the upward trend of investment in the country. Vietnam’s thriving coatings industry has attracted both multinational paint companies, as well as regional players and it continues to be one of the fastest growing coatings industries in South East Asia. AkzoNobel Vietnam, Nippon Paint Vietnam and Jotun Paints have all been present in the country since the early 90’s and regional companies 4 Oranges and TOA Paints also have a significant presence in the country.

New investment continues to take place throughout Vietnam: In April 2018, Jotun Paints signed a contract confirming it will invest US$70bn in building its second plant in Vietnam and in 2015, AkzoNobel invested significantly in its performance coatings business, doubling the capacity at its powder coatings facility in Dong Nai.

In 2018, Beckers, a global coatings company, opened its second site in Vietnam, while DKSH opened a new, state-of-the-art distribution centre for its Performance Materials unit. Huntsman also invested heavily in the country, opening a formulations manufacturing facilitycomprising manufacturing and R&D capabilities, a technical service centre, warehouse and distribution space and a commercial office.

Vietnam’s paint and coatings industry was estimated to be worth around US$620M at the close of 2017, a figure expected to increase due to the country’s booming architectural sector. Accounting for approximately 60% of Vietnam’s paint and coatings market, the architectural paint segment remains the country’s main focus, with the retail market for decorative paint and coatings expected to increase to approximately US$460M by 2021.

With so much going on in the country, the Asia Coatings Congress 2019is one way to keep in touch with the industry’s latest developments.
