Formulators of waterborne inks, overprint varnishes (OPVs) and low/medium PVC paints can now achieve efficient foam control with fewer worries about the formation of surface defects.
The use of low-VOC binders, the reduction of co-solvent in formulations and demands for increased speed in paint production and application make foam control an ongoing challenge for formulators of waterborne paints and inks.
Defoaming is easy to achieve – but, in some cases, incompatibility between the defoamer and the formulation often leads to film defects, such as pinholes, cratering, fisheyes and dewetting.
Dow Corning’s new family of waterborne antifoams includes a range of solutions that offer high levels of efficiency with low levels of defects. Dow Corning 69 Additive, 8590, 8603, 8610 and 8628 Additive are easily dispersible silicone compounds and emulsions designed for use in waterborne inks, OPVs and industrial and architectural paints. They offer a good balance of efficiency, compatibility and antifoaming performance at low dosage levels. Additionally, all are APEO-free and low-VOC.
