Polyaspartic coatings can make a functional garage the talk of the neighborhood. While the neighbors’ rubbernecking eventually subsides, the high performance and durability of polyaspartic coatings remain.
To demonstrate the practical benefits of polyaspartic coatings, Bayer MaterialScience LLC monitored the application of a two-part polyaspartic coating on an approximately 700sq ft residential garage. The application shows the benefits of polyaspartic coatings, including excellent ultraviolet- (UV), chemical-, and abrasion-resistance; ultra-low volatile organic compounds (VOCs); colour stability; and cleanability.
Steven Reinstadtler, coatings marketing manager – Construction Group and Sustainability, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties (CAS), Bayer MaterialScience LLC, will present a case study based on this topic at 11am, February 11 during the SSPC conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. He will discuss the original garage floor case study, including surface preparation and application, as well as a review of the surface today – three and a half years later – to determine how it has held up to UV exposure, road salt, motor oil, antifreeze and vehicle traffic.
Additionally, he will share the advantages of polyaspartic coating technology compared with traditional coating technologies, such as premium, cost-effective formulations that offer fast cure/quick return to service and can help reduce labour costs due to enhanced productivity. Coatings made with polyaspartic esters can be applied at temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit as well as in high-humidity environments, which extends the application season for commercial and residential projects.
Professional application is required for these coatings, which can be applied by a simple brush and roller and do not require special equipment. Typical polyaspartic coatings can be applied from start (base coat) to finish (top coat) in an eight-hour work day.
"Architects and building and construction professionals know all too well the pressure to accomplish excellent work cost effectively in a limited timeframe,” Reinstadtler said. "Whether for residential garage floors, game rooms and basements or commercial applications such as hotel lobbies, cafeterias or retail space, polyaspartic coatings crafted from Bayer raw materials provide durable, aesthetically pleasing floor finishes with minimal downtime and faster return to service.”
