Under the brand names Songnox CS and Songsorb CS, Songwon offers a high-quality product portfolio consisting of antioxidants, UV absorbers and HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilisers), which protect paints and lacquers from damaging UV radiation, subsequent photo-oxidation and heat exposure. As of now, Biesterfeld Spezialchemie will sell these products on the German market.
Included in the range of UV absorbers are benzotriazoles (BTZ), benzophenones (BP), hydroxyphenyltriazines (HPT), oxalanilides and sterically hindered amines (HALS). Phenolic primary antioxidants, phosphites, and phosphonites for use as process stabilisers are available as part of the antioxidant range.
The products protect lacquers and paints during the manufacturing process and extend the shelf life of the end product. During certain manufacturing processes, such as synthesis, mixing, or the high temperature curing cycles, which lacquers undergo, the organic materials are subjected to extreme heat exposure. This can result in coatings becoming brittle or loosing mechanical properties, such as strength. Photo-oxidation also typically causes colour changes in the material like yellowing or fading. As a consequence, photo-oxidation leads to photochemical degradation, which is visible in further surface defects. These include loss of gloss, formation of cracks or chalking of paint.
Making the correct choice from the product portfolio is, therefore, necessary to ensure coatings are sufficiently protected. The following criteria are especially important: solubility of the additive in the formulation, compatibility of the additive with the binder and sufficient homogenisation of the additive.
"Our experienced team assists customers during the selection and approval process of a suitable additive,” explained Dr Martin Liebenau, Marketing Manager CASE, Biesterfeld Spezialchemie. "As a specialist in additives and selected raw materials, we possess many years of technical know-how related to product applications in this market segment.”
Biesterfeld Spezialchemie has already been engaged in successful cooperation with Songwon in the European market for a number of years in the area of antioxidants for the plastics and related industries.
