This year, 2016, marks the 100th anniversary of the first commercialisation of titanium dioxide, the essential white pigment, by KRONOS Worldwide, Inc. There are very few industrial products that can boast a 100-year life cycle that is still on an upward growth trend! TiO2 is one such product.
Although not essential for life itself, one atom of titanium and two atoms of oxygen, coalesced in crystalline form, are essential for our modern ‘quality of life’. This remarkable opacifier creates a reflective barrier between our eyes and many unsightly substrates. Imagine a world with only sombre, earth-coloured paints that require innumerable coats to hide the substrate from our view. Imagine plastic resins, yellowish and mottled, being used for window and door profiles, siding, bottles and packaging. Imagine laminates with translucent or unattractive surfaces. Not a pretty picture!
KRONOS is extremely proud of being the founder of our industry and of its key role in the inception of this wonder product and many subsequent refinements and we look forward to our next 100 years as the ‘First Choice for a Brighter Life’.
100 years of KRONOS means decades of supplying the plastics industry with white pigments. Its products are considered the industry standard for colouring plastics. Today KRONOS is offering around 60 different pigments for all industries. KRONOS developed benchmark products right from the early days. Its grades KRONOS 2220 for PVC and KRONOS 2230/KRONOS 2233 for engineering plastics are the reference grades in the industry. Its first participation at Düsseldorf’s K fair actually dates back to the early ’60s. It is dedicated to giving plastics colour and protection from degradation.
The key to its success is reliability, outstanding quality, and innovation. The company counts on the partnership with its customers.
